Some of my friends—people in general—like to laugh. They say, “People from the South are so ignorant and funny.”
First off, not all people from the South are ignorant; a majority of Southerners are educated.
Secondly, ignorance should not be funny.
Yes, everyone gets a hardy chuckle watching MadTV’s Southern skits or Blue Collar Television, because it’s hard to believe people like that still exist.
Unfortunately, they do.
There is a young man in my Philosophy class who manages to put his foot in his mouth every time the class meets without realizing it. During Wednesday’s class, we were discussing how a god could exist in a world where terrible things happen.
He said that he doesn’t know much about the Bible. But he does know that in the Bible, it says that God is a vengeful god, and when people die, they deserve it. When the professor asked him about Holocaust victims, the young man spoke. “It’s like Noah’s Ark. The people weren’t listening to God, so he killed them off.”
This same young man spit in my face last April because I was silently protesting Lawrence King’s death on the Day of Silence. He doesn’t remember me, but I will never forget him.
I don’t blame him for his ignorance. Every time I’ve ever talked to him, he’s mentioned something his father taught/told him.
My best friend is Jewish. She actually just started our college’s first Jewish Student Organization on campus, and I’m proud of her. Her roommate, another close friend of mine, is black. A majority of my friends are gay. I’ve had friends who have had abortions. My uncle was in Iraq for 8 months. My brother—charismatic, funny, and college educated—cannot find a job. I know victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and incest. I’m afraid that I won’t be able to pay my college loans off when I graduate.
Nothing is going to be fixed with McCain. I can’t promise you that Obama will be able to fix everything, but I can promise you that McCain won’t fix anything.
As an American woman, I have a responsibility to vote. It hasn’t even been a hundred years since women were granted suffrage. I certainly can’t vote for a candidate who doesn’t support women.
Below are some links that further prove why we can’t have McCain in office:

Polls are open from 7:00AM-8:00PM.
If you are a first time voter, you must bring a state issued ID. It’s also a good idea to bring your voter registration card. IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION CARD BUT ARE REGISTERED, YOU ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO VOTE.
Do not wear anything supporting your candidate because the laws/rules are unclear.
Make sure you’re going to the right polling place. http://www.voteforchange.com/
DO NOT GET OUT OF LINE! Bring a book or something to do. I’m bringing a portable chessboard. Even if the polls have closed, as long as you are in line, you can still vote.
Be polite, listen to directions, and be respectful.
I’ve worked too hard to see such a horrible person rule over America for the next four years.
